As part of WP1 of the ZOOCAM programme - Identification, characterisation and circulation of potentially zoonotic viruses in wild mammals in the Camargue - The aim is to identify viruses harboured by wild mammals that are likely to be transmitted to humans, and to analyse their dynamics over time.

The choice of study sites was based on three main criteria: the ecological representativeness of the Camargue environment, the diversity of mammal species potentially carrying viruses, and the logistical feasibility sampling campaigns. The sites selected cover a wide range of habitats typical of the Camargue (wetlands, reedbeds, woodlands, etc.), while ensuring that the animal communities targeted are representative.

All in all, seven sites were selected for this study:

  1. Meyranne marshes
  2. Marais du Vigueirat
  3. Domaine de La Palissade - Camargue Regional Nature Park
  4. Tour du Valat
  5. Camargue National Nature Reserve
  6. Pont de Gau
  7. Centre du Scamandre
